Children or gifted students who do not perform as expected potential called underachiever. There are several characteristics inherent in these learners.
According to R. Semiawan Conny, who is also education observer Permanent Professors Graduate Program Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia, some common features can be seen in students who are classified as an underachiever, among others:
- Attitudes which generally do not show maturity
- Negative attitude toward the condition or state of school
- Attitudes and habits that are less well studied
- Low self-attitude (inferior) the sometimes excessive
- Tend to be defensive
- Often like to blame others
- Feel a sense of low self-esteem, which is often demonstrated with unproductive behavior (lazy)
- Low productivity, which causes the learning process that lived more often dependent on others (learned helplessness)
Super achievement
Conny said, the problem of underachievement has two sides. The first side is underachievement in the strict sense, whereas the second is called underachievement with super achievement, the pressures experienced by gifted students to be perfect and very intelligent, a desire to be extraordinary children than others, felt the most creative, and concern to be admired by peers because of his appearance to receive popularity.
According to Conny, the characteristics of children who have super achievement conditions include:
- Tend to internalize stress in, because the people around him too much admired and praised
- Difficult to grow and progress if all that does not take credit.
