Today, the world was moving from the real world into the digital world. The amendment requires the availability of qualified experts in the field of information technology (IT). As a result, even now opened bloom IT departments at various universities.
One of them in Binus University. Techniques of Informatics and Information Systems are the two majors of interest many students. In Department of Information Engineering, students will learn the application technology, software methods and technology, and infrastructure systems in the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). “So, we learn not only the use of information technology, but it must be a developer or producer,” explains Head of Department of Information Engineering University Binus Purnomo told okezone Freddy, on Wednesday (28/07/2010).
Freddy explains, in the field of IT, there are three streams (channels) that currently has good prospects for employment or business opportunities is web technology, gaming technology, and mobile devices. “Business in the world of IT, especially the Internet is still very wide. It was like sleeping like a land that still need us to work on more serious,” said Freddy.
According to Freddy, who worked on bare land was potentially more serious is the youth that he calls ‘digital natives’. “So, when mature, they will see the digital world as something tangible where they can live and earn a living,” he added. This may also cause proliferation of IT departments in various universities of the digital natives are curiosity about the IT they use everyday like the Internet.
In Binus, there are five specialization in IT majors. First, software engineering specialization. Here, students explore a variety of methodologies and software development tools. Second, the specialization of intelligent systems, namely explore various techniques of computer intelligence that can be applied to solve a problem.
Third, the specialization network and applied network, which had an interest in computer networking including installation, administration and management of a computer network (CISCO). Fourth, the specialization database technology and database to explore a variety of applied technology and development of database system (ORACLE). Fifth, the specialization of the interactive multimedia, which deepens betbagai methodology and application development tools based on multimedia.
IT graduates who studied five such specialization will likely be among them systems analyst, systems programmers, web designers, web programmers, IT consultants, multi-media designer, engineer or games.
Freddy sure, the ability of Indonesian students in the field of IT is not inferior to foreign students. “I dare say, thought patterns and logic of the Indonesian students even better than those in developed countries,” says this bespectacled man.
However, Freddy regrets, rampant piracy makes IT as software products made in Indonesia is still losing competitiveness with foreign products. “What we need is to strengthen the quality control by applying the stress test before a product is released to the public. As such, the quality of our IT products are also tested so that the public interest,” he explained.
Freddy remind students and students currently pursue IT as a field of study to not be afraid to try something new. “Believe me, our nation’s capital does not lose IQ from other nations,” he said confidently.
The government had also started paying attention to the development of the IT world in Indonesia, one of them through the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Awards, a competition among different creative IT industry in Indonesia. In no event Buiness Awards ICT Mapping Programme (BMP) that bring together IT manufacturers in Indonesia with investors. “This is the first step and a good synergy of government,” concluded Freddy.
